Graduates looking for that competitive edge

Release Date: 18 December 2009

Recent research from a specialist jobs board has reported that they have received well over 9000 applications for a single vacancy, further highlighting the struggles that UK job seekers are facing to stand out from the crowd. The same report identified that they had seen a 150% increase in applications as a consequence of the credit crunch.

This just goes to show how competitive the market is at the moment. Graduates must be more aware of the difficulties they are facing and act accordingly to improve their chances. This means seeking opportunities in proactive and creative ways and not limiting themselves to merely the most obvious companies or job roles.

“For graduates it can too often be unclear from advertising how many vacancies are actually available within a scheme leaving many jobseekers with false hope” says Lee Clarke Commercial Manager at Discovery Graduates. “There needs to be more transparency in the advertising process to encourage more proactivity from job seekers.”

“It is not all doom and gloom” he continues “there are still great opportunities out there in the core areas of business such as Engineering, Finance and Sales, and there are many opportunities to develop within the SME market place and in more specialist roles in large organisations.”

Graduates must seek out work experience while at university and be able to show a clear and well researched focus when applying to roles.  If you feel you do not have the work experience already, don’t panic; to get that competitive edge graduates must be confident about themselves and show an inspiring positivity to stand out from the crowd.
