University leavers told to remain positive

Graduates have been told to remain positive about the prospect of trying to secure a graduate job, despite the unnerving recession we are currently facing.
Carl Gilleard, Chief Executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) has blamed the media for creating an increasingly pessimistic view of the graduate jobs market and focusing too strongly on the negative data that surrounds graduate recruitment. Talking of the events that the AGR plans to run in order to raise awareness of the amount of opportunities that are still out there, he said “We hope they will relay these insights to the young people graduating this year so they can get a more balanced picture of what is happening in the graduate jobs market.”
The National Graduate Recruitment Awards, held in May, only strengthened the view that graduate recruitment is still going strong, as a great deal of employers who attended the event confirmed that they will be maintaining employment levels for university leavers. The same message was also given by the AGR’s recent Recruiter Confidence Snapshot Survey, which revealed that 33% of graduate recruiters are still actively seeking applications from graduates in 2009.
